Description

Delicious Lebanese Za’atar Halloumi Fries that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect for a snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups halloumi cheese, cut into fries (about 1/2 inch thick)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons za’atar spice blend
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup olive oil (for frying)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Lemon wedges (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Begin by preparing the halloumi fries. Cut the halloumi cheese into fry-shaped pieces, about 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Set up a breading station: place the flour in one shallow dish, the beaten egg in another, and combine the panko breadcrumbs, za’atar, garlic powder, and black pepper in a third dish.
  3. Dredge each halloumi fry in the flour, shaking off any excess. Next, dip it into the beaten egg, allowing any excess to drip off, and finally coat it in the panko mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
  4. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the breaded halloumi fries in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Remove the fries from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb any excess oil.
  6. Serve the halloumi fries warm, garnished with chopped parsley and lemon wedges on the side for squeezing over the top.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the panko mixture.
  • Try serving the fries with a yogurt-based dipping sauce, such as tzatziki, for added flavor.
