Description

Sauerbraten Meatballs with Red Cabbage is a delicious dish that combines flavorful meatballs with a tangy side of red cabbage.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 medium head red cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 large apple, peeled and diced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, salt, pepper, ginger, and allspice. Mix until well combined.
  2. Form the mixture into meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the beef broth, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer, then return the meatballs to the skillet. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, until cooked through.
  5. While the meatballs are simmering, prepare the red cabbage. In a large pot, combine the sliced cabbage, diced apple, sliced onion, apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper, and water. Stir well.
  6. Cover the pot and cook over medium heat for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender.
  7. Serve the meatballs hot with the red cabbage on the side.

Notes

  • For a tangier flavor, add a tablespoon of mustard to the meatball mixture.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version of the meatballs.
