This Authentic Greek Bougatsa features a flaky pastry filled with luscious creamy custard, perfect for breakfast or dessert.
Ingredients

- 1 cup semolina
- 1 cup sugar
- 4 cups milk
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon lemon zest
- 10 sheets phyllo pastry
- 1 cup melted butter
- powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a saucepan, heat the milk until warm.
- In a bowl, beat the eggs and gradually add sugar, semolina, and vanilla.
- Slowly pour in the warm milk, mixing continuously.
- Cook this mixture over medium heat until thickened, then add lemon zest.
- Layer 5 sheets of phyllo in a greased baking dish, brushing each with melted butter.
- Pour the custard mixture over the phyllo layers.
- Cover with remaining phyllo sheets, brushing each with butter.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
- Best served warm or at room temperature.
- Can be prepared a day in advance.
