Description

This Authentic Greek Bougatsa features a flaky pastry filled with luscious creamy custard, perfect for breakfast or dessert.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup semolina
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 cups milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 10 sheets phyllo pastry
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • powdered sugar for dusting


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a saucepan, heat the milk until warm.
  3. In a bowl, beat the eggs and gradually add sugar, semolina, and vanilla.
  4. Slowly pour in the warm milk, mixing continuously.
  5. Cook this mixture over medium heat until thickened, then add lemon zest.
  6. Layer 5 sheets of phyllo in a greased baking dish, brushing each with melted butter.
  7. Pour the custard mixture over the phyllo layers.
  8. Cover with remaining phyllo sheets, brushing each with butter.
  9. Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Let cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.
